Rome Transport Guide: Airport Trains, Metro & Tickets

Plan Rome transport in two parts: the journey from your arrival station or airport, and the local trip to your accommodation or sights. Roma Termini, Roma Tiburtina, Fiumicino Airport and Ciampino Airport are different places. Check the exact names before buying tickets or estimating transfer time.
Fiumicino Airport: Leonardo Express or FL1?

Trenitalia’s published Leonardo Express adult fare was €14 when checked on 11 October 2026. Check the live timetable and the exact ticket conditions before buying. The scheduled train time excludes immigration, baggage collection, walking to the airport station and travel after arrival in Rome. Integrated Metrebus tickets are not valid on Leonardo Express.

Choose the correct Rome railway station
Termini connects with Metro A and B. Tiburtina connects with Metro B and serves regional and long-distance trains. Which station is best depends on your actual train and accommodation; neither is automatically the fastest starting point for every journey.
If one ticket arrives at Termini and another departs from Tiburtina, allow for a city transfer. Even within the same station, leave time to read the board, find the platform and reach the carriage. Match the train number and scheduled time because the board may show a final destination beyond your stop.
Metro, buses and trams: compare the local ticket
Use ATAC’s route planner and current notices to choose a metro, bus, tram or combination. A stop near a landmark may still require walking. Service changes, lift availability and road traffic can affect the practical route.

Choose a pass by the trips you expect to make, not simply the length of your hotel stay. Check the covered area and exclusions, especially for airports. Paper tickets, contactless payment and digital products have their own use instructions; follow ATAC’s current guidance for the method you choose.
An onward train needs its own booking plan
For Florence, Naples or Milan, compare the selected date, exact station pair, price and fare conditions. Buying a local transport ticket does not reserve a high-speed seat. After a flight, allow for airport delays and check whether a separately booked onward ticket can be changed.
Practical checks before leaving
- Use current departure boards and operator notices, including strike updates for the specific date.
- Allow extra walking time if you have large bags, children or an accessibility requirement; check assistance in advance.
- Keep your ticket and any required identification available. Follow the ticket’s validation instructions.
- For late arrivals or early flights, verify first and last services and a practical alternative transfer.
- Use official taxi ranks or licensed booking channels and confirm the applicable fare; avoid relying on an undated taxi quote.
