Choosing the right station matters because Italian cities often have several rail stops. A cheap fare to the wrong station can cost more time than it saves.
Know the main station names
Roma Termini, Milano Centrale, Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Venezia Santa Lucia, Napoli Centrale, Torino Porta Nuova, and Bologna Centrale are common visitor hubs.
Read departures by train number
Departure boards may show the final destination, not your intermediate stop. Match your ticket by train number, time, and platform.
Allow time for large stations
Major stations have gates, long corridors, and busy concourses. Arrive earlier if you need food, luggage storage, or a connection.

Why station names affect the real itinerary
Italian search results may show several stations for the same city. For Rome, Termini and Tiburtina can both be useful, but they serve different neighborhoods. For Venice, Venezia Santa Lucia and Venezia Mestre create very different arrival experiences. In Milan, Milano Centrale is the main hub, while other stations may fit specific routes better.
Always compare the train result with your hotel map and onward transport. A lower fare can be a poor choice if it adds a taxi, metro transfer, or missed check-in window.
