Rome to Florence takes about 1.5 hours by direct high-speed train. Frecciarossa and Italo serve this corridor, with the exact duration depending on your departure station, train and stops. Italo advertises some journeys from about 1 hour 25 minutes; Trenitalia describes Frecciarossa connections of about 1 hour 30 minutes. These are planning guides, not a promise for every departure.
For many visitors, the useful station pairing is Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina to Firenze Santa Maria Novella, usually abbreviated Firenze S. M. Novella or Firenze SMN. Compare the Rome to Florence departures for your date, including the full station names and fare conditions.

Choose the right stations
Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina
Do not choose a departure on price alone. A train leaving Tiburtina is only convenient if you can reach Tiburtina with time to spare. Likewise, a Termini booking requires you to board there unless the operator explicitly permits a change. Check your accommodation address and local transport before committing to an early departure.
Coming from Fiumicino Airport is a separate transfer. Leonardo Express runs to Termini; the FL1 regional line serves Tiburtina and other Rome stations. Allow for arrival formalities, baggage collection and the station transfer before choosing a train-specific onward ticket. A tight connection after a flight can erase the benefit of a cheap fare.
Firenze Santa Maria Novella or Campo di Marte
Florence’s tourism office identifies Santa Maria Novella as the main station in the city centre. It is a useful starting point for the historic centre, but the final walk or local transfer depends on your hotel and luggage. Campo di Marte and Rifredi are different city stations, not alternate names for SMN. If a result arrives there, plan the onward transfer before comparing its total journey time with an SMN arrival.
Frecciarossa or Italo: compare the departure and fare
Both operators offer high-speed travel on this route. Look first at the departure and arrival stations, total duration and available class. Then open the fare conditions: a comfortable seat and a flexible ticket are different features.
Trenitalia and Italo use their own fare products. The same word, such as Economy, does not imply identical change or refund rules across operators. Check the deadline, any fee, any fare difference and the cancellation terms. For an appointment with an uncertain finish time, flexibility may be more useful than the lowest displayed price.
How to find a suitable price
Search once your travel date is reasonably firm, then compare several departures around your preferred time. Limited promotional offers may sell out, but buying early does not guarantee a particular saving. There is no single advance-purchase price or universal opening date for every service.
Compare the total payable for everyone travelling, including any seller charges shown at checkout, rather than a headline “from” price. If you are considering a slower regional or Intercity result, read its actual duration and any connections. It should not be compared with the roughly 1.5-hour high-speed journey as though the products were identical.
Is Florence a realistic day trip from Rome?
It can be, if you choose an outbound and return that leave enough useful time in Florence. Add local transfers, time at the station and a buffer before timed museum entry. A practical first visit might focus on one area of the historic centre and one pre-booked attraction rather than trying to cover the whole city.

- Check the operator’s service updates and confirm your full departure station.
- Match the train number and scheduled departure on the station board; the final destination displayed may be beyond Florence.
- Keep the issued ticket, booking reference and identification available.
- Confirm the carriage and seat before boarding, and keep luggage out of the aisles.
- At arrival, check that the station name matches your planned onward transfer.
