Italy Train Luggage: Italo Rules, Storage & Transfer Tips
Luggage rules on Italian trains depend on the operator, service and sometimes the travel class. A suitcase accepted on one train is not proof that every train-plus-bus product accepts it. Check the exact journey before choosing a fare, especially if your itinerary includes a coach, an airport transfer or bulky equipment.
Check the operator and class before packing
On the official Italo luggage page checked on 7 September 2026, Smart class allows luggage up to 75 × 53 × 30 cm. The page describes larger luggage arrangements for Prima Business and Club Executive. Recheck the current policy before travel and read restrictions on oversized items; do not interpret a different class as permission to bring any object. These are Italo-specific details, not a universal Trenitalia allowance.
Know where each bag will go
Italo describes overhead racks and designated larger luggage areas; layouts differ between trains and coaches. Use storage suitable for the bag and keep aisles, doors and emergency routes clear. Carry valuables and travel documents with you. Having a reserved seat does not reserve a private luggage rack, so pack items you can safely handle and place in shared space.
Prams, folding bikes and mixed train-bus trips
Italo’s published guidance requires permitted wheeled items such as prams, folding bicycles and scooters to be fully folded and placed in the designated areas; it lists additional restrictions. Check the complete policy for your item. An intermodal coach segment can have separate baggage conditions, even when sold within the same journey. Do not apply a rail carriage’s storage rules to the coach hold.
Airport services and station transfers
Trenitalia’s Leonardo Express page states that luggage, including large items, does not attract a surcharge on that service. You must still manage the bags through the airport and station. If changing trains at Rome or Milan, allow time for walking and finding the next carriage. For Venice, consider bridges and water transport on the final journey to the hotel.
Luggage storage and lost property
Before leaving bags at a station storage service, check its exact location, opening hours, accepted items and collection deadline. Store the receipt separately from the bag. If an item is left on a train, report it through that operator’s lost-property channel with the train number, date, carriage and a description. A booking service cannot guarantee recovery or custody of belongings left on board.
